Rhoda and I knew Mike for many years as a head teacher colleague. He always exuded a calm aura of professional expertise and wisdom. Whilst he was head of Alumwell, he was asked to serve as the interim head of Palfrey Junior before I was appointed as head there. 

During his short period at the school he made an immediate impact. The staff and pupils loved him. His advice and encouragement made the transition to my succession to the post so much easier. He was a tough act to follow.
